Description

In Quedlinburg in Landkreis Harz (Sachsen-Anhalt) the Mitteldeutsches Eisenbahn- und Spielzeugmuseum is devoted to documenting historic toy and model railway culture. It combines the presentation of technical exhibits with displays of everyday objects from the history of toys.

On approximately 500 square metres of exhibition space nearly 3,000 objects have been assembled. These include dolls, dollhouses and shop counters, tin toys, steam engines, military toys, as well as children's books and board and parlour games. Historic model railways in gauges I, 0, S and H0 run through modelled landscapes; the collection features primarily models by Märklin as well as foreign makes. Among the special pieces are steam-powered locomotives, so-called crocodile locomotives and a replica of the Adler train.

The collection is rooted in the long-standing collecting passion of a private collector, the core of which was handed over to the city and prepared for public display. In a display case the recreated hobby room from this collection can be seen, providing insight into the contexts of creation and use of the exhibits.
