The county-run museum, located in the abbess’s wing of the former St. Marien Convent in the town of Bersenbrück, was founded in 1924. After a two-year renovation, the “new” museum in the convent reopened its doors in early November 2018. In addition to an extensive renovation that restored the building’s historic core to view, the permanent exhibition was redesigned and reconceived to more than meet the standards of a modern, accessible museum.
The museum in the convent sees itself first and foremost as a historical museum for the region of northern Osnabrück. The modern permanent exhibition traces the building’s history of use and explains its significance for the town and the region. To help visitors better understand past eras, they are introduced through images and audio to three “museum companions”—people who lived and worked in the building.
In addition, a large special exhibition space makes it possible to explore various topics in an engaging way. A wide range of educational programs invites visitors to gain deeper insights. A cafeteria offers a relaxing place to unwind after exploring the exhibits.
