Description

In summer 2016 the museum was reopened with an extension and a significantly expanded collection. The striking new building, with its clear form and its lively shimmering dark façade, forms a dramatic contrast to the restrained, listed miner’s house. Penzberg was a mining town until 1966, and the coal-containing bricks keep that material visually present in the town. The house presents permanent and special exhibitions in the fields of art and local (city) history. The focus of the art collection is the diverse work of Heinrich Campendonk (1889–1957), the youngest member of the Blue Rider. The museum here holds the world’s largest collection, which in many facets — from oil paintings and watercolours to prints, reverse-glass paintings and windows — opens up his oeuvre. Other artists are also presented, from the ZEN 49 group with Gerhard Fietz to contemporaries. A special subject is modern reverse-glass painting. In the old building a miner’s flat from around 1920 can be seen, furnished with contemporary furniture and household effects and supplemented by media presentations. There is also a memorial room commemorating the dramatic end of the war, the “Penzberg Night of Murder” of 28 April 1945.
