Description

In the Upper Bavarian district of Traunstein, the Römermuseum Grabenstätt is dedicated to the collection and presentation of Roman finds from the surrounding area.

Since August 2012 the museum has been housed in the Schlossökonomie behind Grabenstätt’s town hall. Its holdings originate in a private collection from which the municipal museum developed.

At the heart of the exhibition is a copy of the military diploma from Geiselprechting dated to 64 AD, which is of particular importance as Bavaria’s earliest precisely dated document.

This is complemented by fragments of wall paintings and mosaics from a villa rustica discovered near Erlstätt in the 19th century, offering insights into the luxury and domestic culture of the Roman province.

Everyday objects, tools, coins, as well as maps and replicas of artworks illustrate the interregional contacts of the provincial Roman population in the first three centuries AD and make the regional history of this period tangible.
