Description

At the historic boundary of the Upper German‑Raetian Limes stands the RömerWelt at caput limitis, linking archaeology, research and interpretation. The experience museum serves as the Limes information center for the state of Rhineland‑Palatinate and is counted among the "masterpieces between the Rhine and Moselle".

The museum is located in the Arienheller district of the municipality of Rheinbrohl, near federal highway B 42, on a site of approximately 6,000 m². The facility opened on 23 August 2008; in 2021 the main building was expanded with an office wing and a combined seminar and workshop room.

The main building houses a large exhibition space with numerous exhibits and information panels on the world of Romans and Germans at the imperial frontier; visitor circulation ends at the ticket area. The outdoor site includes a herb garden and reconstructions of a Roman pile driver and a construction crane. Stonemason and blacksmith workshops have also been established on the grounds; an approximately 50‑metre‑long reconstruction of the rampart‑and‑ditch system and a palisade illustrates the fortification structures of the Upper German‑Raetian Limes.

At the rear of the site are a contubernium building with a playroom, an exhibition on fishing, reconstructed sleeping and weapons quarters of an auxiliary unit, and a larger event space. A bakehouse with a hearth, mills and ovens, an archery range and a playground complete the offerings. Workshop demonstrations show stoneworking, non‑ferrous metal casting and blacksmithing; since 2020 glass beads have been produced, and since 2022 blown glass vessels have also been demonstrated.

Since 2022 RömerWelt has hosted the International Reenactment Fair IRM, a forum for makers of replica archaeological finds from the Stone Age to the 19th century. The museum and outdoor facilities are accessible to visitors with disabilities. The site is the starting point of the approximately nine‑kilometre RömerWeltWeg; the circular trail follows the Upper German‑Raetian Limes to the Limes educational trail at the site of watchtower Wp 1/8. Between Rheinbrohl and Bad Hönningen, near the Rhine, is the reconstruction of watchtower Wp 1/1 (1973).

The owner and operator is the foundation "Caput Limitis", founded on 22 December 2005 and based in Bad Hönningen.
