Description
In the historical fabric of Kalkar, the Städtisches Museum Kalkar plays a central role in local cultural preservation and appeals to visitors interested in town history and the visual arts.
The museum is housed in a stepped-gable house dating from 1500. A modern extension provides a link to the city archive; this archive is located in the Bürgerhaus of the town, which dates from 1430.
The institution opened on 13 October 1966 and has since established itself as an exhibition venue. Since 1994, the Verein der Freunde Kalkars has organised the rotating exhibitions of contemporary art.
The holdings include, alongside exhibits on the town’s history, an art collection featuring paintings by Gerhard Janssen, Max Clarenbach, Heinrich Nauen, Hermann Teuber and Franz Radziwill. The sculpture collection includes works by, among others, Kubach-Wilmsen, Heinrich Moshage, Alfred Sabisch and Günther Zins. In this way, the museum presents both local history and selected examples of modern and contemporary art.
