The building of today´s StadtGalerie on Neuwieder Deich was completed in 1768 as a sacred building and used as a Mennonite church until 1991. After renovation by the city of Neuwied and the architects Georg and Juhr (Altwied), it was opened to art-loving visitors as the “Municipal Gallery in the former Mennonite Church”. Built in the “Rhenish Baroque” style, today´s StadtGalerie is successfully integrated into the old town, opposite Neuwied Castle and the Castle Theater. Since its reopening on January 1, 1992, the building has housed two art collections: a picture collection of the city of Neuwied and the collection of the Berninger Foundation. With its program of constantly changing exhibitions, the StadtGalerie offers space for a wide audience.
