Fascination with Time – Experiencing Time
Not far from the Saxon state capital of Dresden lies Germany´s watch center: Glashütte. In this town, watch factories line up next to each other, and everything revolves around the theme of time and the exquisite timepieces manufactured here. Since its founding in 1845, the Glashütte watch industry has made a name for itself internationally as well. The German Watch Museum Glashütte provides a comprehensive overview from the beginnings of this long tradition in 1845 to the present day with today´s Glashütte watch manufacturers.
On approximately 1000 square meters, the permanent exhibition showcases over 500 partly unique Glashütte timepieces as well as numerous other exhibits. Several interactive stations also provide interesting information on the topics of time and timekeeping. For example, there is a walk-in encyclopedia that describes numerous terms from the watch world, or a large-scale watch model that vividly explains the essential functions of a mechanical watch. At the historic studio of the Glashütte Original manufacture, which is one of the sponsors of the watch museum, you can watch watchmakers restoring historical Glashütte watches over their shoulders.
Exciting tours, regular special exhibitions, audio guides in several languages, and numerous offerings for children and families allow both large and small visitors to delve deeper into the world of watches and timekeeping. To conclude the visit, it is worth taking a look in the museum shop for a special souvenir.
