Description

The Wehrgeschichtliche Museum Rastatt (WGM) is housed in the south wing of the Residenzschloss in Rastatt; its collections examine modern German military history.

The origin and development of the holdings date back to the museum’s founding in 1934 in Karlsruhe as the Badisches Armeemuseum. The early holdings consisted of the military collections of the Badisches Landesmuseum together with selected objects from the Freiburger Augustinermuseum. In 1956 the collections were moved to the Rastatt Residenzschloss; parts of the former Württembergisches Armeemuseum were added to the collection. Over time the holdings grew through donations and acquisitions. Until 1996 the museum was under the sponsorship of the Bundeswehr.

After a multi-year closure for renovation and reconception, the institution was reopened in 1999 in its present form. Since then the museum has been operated by an independent GmbH, which is supported by the Land Baden-Württemberg, the Stadt Rastatt and a Förderverein; through this Förderverein the Bundesministerium der Verteidigung also contributes to its further financing. The collection now comprises approximately 80,000 exhibits, the majority of which belong to the Land Baden-Württemberg.
