Description

In the municipality of Gescher in the district of Borken in the administrative region of Münster, the Westfälische Glockenmuseum presents the material evidence of bell and bell‑ringing culture as well as the history of its research.

The museum is housed in a small listed building that was originally erected in 1902 as a police station. On approximately 465 m² of exhibition space, the collection displays about 1,000 objects: bells, small bells and sleigh bells, two of the exhibited bells dating to the Roman period. Visitors can follow the work of a bell founder at a faithfully reconstructed workstation; a dedicated Gelbgießerei is also available for demonstrations. A renovation in 2010, which added a large exhibition hall and a new entrance area, nearly doubled the exhibition space.

The association Vereinigung Deutsches Glockenmuseum e. V. is also based under the roof of the building. Founded in 1984, the organization conducts campanological research at national and international levels and relies, among other resources, on a specialist library of around 4,000 volumes. Research findings are presented at an annual colloquium and published in the Yearbook of Campanology, which has appeared since 1989. The museum and the association cooperate as partners.
