Since the founding of the satire magazines Pardon and Titanic, Frankfurt am Main has been known as the official “capital of satire.” The opening of the Caricatura Museum Frankfurt in 2008 continues this tradition. Its permanent exhibition features works by F. W. Bernstein, Robert Gernhardt, Chlodwig Poth, Hans Traxler, and F. K. Waechter. Together with the authors Bernd Eilert, Eckhard Henscheid, and Peter Knorr, these artists formed the Neue Frankfurter Schule (New Frankfurt School). Other prominent representatives of comical art from Germany and around the world are featured in temporary exhibitions, while the Caricatura Salon offers explorations of current topics and related disciplines.
The museum’s collection consists of more than 10,000 originals from the Neue Frankfurter Schule as well as around 11,000 drawings by other cartoonists, making it the museum with the highest density of humor in the global museum landscape.
There is also plenty to laugh at frequent live events such as readings, book presentations, and other performances regarding comical art.
In 2025, the museum was entrusted with Loriot’s artistic estate as a permanent loan. Plans are underway to display the collection in a separate external venue in the future.
