The “Museum of Westlausitz” is a regional landscape museum that houses collections on zoology, geology, botany, archaeology and cultural history and is housed in the two buildings “Elementarium” and “Sammelsurium”.
The Elementarium
The “Elementarium” experience (exhibition) is a hands-on museum. On an expedition through six themed worlds, you can follow in the footsteps of the most important landscape designers on earth. The “Ponickauhaus” in Kamenz now houses the exhibitions of the Museum der Westlausitz Kamenz - the Elementarium. Here you will also find the café, the museum store and the library.
A journey through 4.5 billion years!
Touch, try out and join in is the motto at the Elementarium. The science adventure starts here for children, families and experts! Travel through time - on the earthquake simulator, in the geological construction market, with mysterious excavation finds and in fascinating special exhibitions!

The Sammelsurium
In the “Sammelsurium” (foam magazine) you can look over the shoulders of archaeologists, biologists and geologists at work.
For many visitors, the museum stands for wonderful exhibits, beautifully arranged - some of them behind glass, but some of them you can even touch. However, only a small part of the collection is shown in the exhibitions. Where are all the other treasures hidden that are not on display?
Since 2000, the scientific collections of the Museum der Westlausitz have been housed under the most modern storage conditions in air-conditioned, dust-protected storage rooms equipped with mobile systems. In the archaeology and cultural history, geology and biology collection areas, more than 30,000 objects from West Lusatia are conserved and kept ready for research.
Another important part of the museum´s work takes place in these rooms. Archaeologists work here, measuring, drawing and archiving shard by shard, and geologists are constantly adding to the collections of magnificent crystals and rare fossils.
The zoology department with its preparation workshop is also located in the Sammelsurium.
The extensive scientific collections await visitors in walk-in stacks.
