Description

It is situated in the south wing of the Würzburg Residenz, appearing extremely modest, almost hidden away, yet the Martin von Wagner Museum could really make a splash: after all, it is one of the most significant university museums in Europe! Its extensive and high-quality collections of ancient and post-ancient art span six millennia of art and cultural history and have served as illustrative material for art history studies since the end of the 18th century. The museum comprises two sections: the Older Section, the Collection of Antiquities, boasts the third-largest collection of Greek pottery in Germany, alongside clay figurines, glassware, marble works and Etruscan and Egyptian antiquities. The Picture Gallery in the Modern Section presents, across eleven rooms, German, Dutch and Italian paintings by renowned artists from the 14th to the 20th centuries, as well as sculptures, including works by Tilman Riemenschneider.
