Kirche St. Marien

Beschreibung

The church is a classicist building characterised by its clear lines and structures and has a Greek cross floor plan. In the chancel at the front of the apse is the historic Italian marble altar donated by Duchess Julie. Above it is a copy of Raphael´s portrait of the "Madonna di Foligno", a gift from Pope Leo XII. The liturgical places in the sanctuary, altar and ambo, and the inlaid floor are made of Löbejün quartz porphyry, designed by Aachen artist Thomas Torkler. The pews and pulpit also date from the time of construction. In the north aisle there is a crucifixion group with medieval figures, while in the south aisle there is a replica of the Pietá (Mater dolorosa) from the Basilica of San Prassede in Rome. The church´s furnishings also include a painting of "Mary with the Child" (by Raphael) and the 17th century painting of the "Sorrowful Mother" by Christophoro Roncalli, once the altarpiece in the chapel of the Brothers of Mercy Hospital in Wallstraße. Worth mentioning is the organ built by the Paderborn organ builder Anton Feith in 1933. Following a renovation of the belfry and an addition to the bells, St. Mary´s has had 6 bells since September 2009, the oldest of which dates back to 1829 and was cast by Gustav Becker in Halle. Since 2015, the church has been home to two themed windows designed by Leipzig painter Michael Triegel.
