The music school in Köthen dates back to the Bürgerliche Musikschule in Köthen under the direction of Eduard Thiele in 1839. In 1972, the Köthen branch of the Dessau music school was founded under the direction of Eleonore Friedrich-Koch, and the music school moved into its own rooms in Köthen Castle in September 1983. The Köthen music school has been the venue for the national Bach competition for young pianists since 1999 and the International Bach Abel Competition for viola da gamba since 1997.
