Römermuseum Villa urbana

Beschreibung

Heitersheim`s history is long and dating far back until the Roman times.

With the beautiful landscape, fertile ground, natural ressources and prexisting celtic silver mines nearby, the location oft he modern city was predestined to be setteled by the Romans.

During 250 years, roman life flourished in this place.

Starting with the first century A.D., in the year 30, there are traces oft the first construction oft the Villa urbana, entirely made of wood. Soon to be followed by half-timbering. At the beginning oft he 2nd century A.D., the whole villa was reconstructed in stone and futher enlarged during the following centuries.

Together with the declining weather and structural and political problems during the end oft the 3rd century, decisions were made to abandon the territories on the right side oft he Rhine. During this process, the Roman Villa urbana in Heitersheim was abandoned, too, which marks the beginning of a new era; the migration period.

Many centuries later, the field known as „shard field“ became the stage for multiple excavations of which the last prolonged campaign was finished in 2011.

Today, parts of the Roman Villa urbana can be visited in the museum located in the Roman Park, together with a reconstruction of a storage building, now used as the inclusive Café artis.
