Station: [9] The Spring
Here in the church high above the city, it’s all about Wyrich and the spring.
Wyrich, do you remember the end of your legend?
Yes. When I had completed my work of atonement, a spring gushed forth from the rock. The sign of forgiveness.
And here it is, right here. Not a myth. Not a picture. In fact, water has been flowing directly from the mountain at this spot for centuries. Right in the middle of a church.
Right in the middle of the church. It still sounds like a miracle.
Above all, it’s something very special. And to this day, this spring isn’t just a museum piece. It still flows with water.
So it still flows just as it did back then?
Yes. During the major renovation in 1929, it was channeled. Since then, the water has been able to flow orderly beneath the church.
The people here must have known the water well.
They did. They always knew that water flowed through this rock. In the nave, they saw the damp walls. That was nothing new.
And yet this spot is different.
Exactly. What makes it special isn’t just the moisture in the mountain. What makes it special is that the water converges here and emerges clearly. A real spring right in the middle of the rock.
Then it was more than just a sign.
For the inhabitants of the old cave fortress, it was invaluable. Their own water supply inside the mountain. Safe from any besieger.
Then the spring might have determined the fate of this place very early on.
Quite possible. Perhaps it was one of the reasons why they built right here. First the castle. Then the church.
In other words, the water became a source of protection. And later, it also became a source of meaning.
Yes. The legend turned it into the most beautiful thing a spring can be. It became a symbol of grace.
So it’s not just water flowing from the mountain here. It’s also the reminder that forgiveness is possible.
And perhaps that is precisely what makes this place so serene and magnificent. The spring is still there today. Still. Clear. And it continues to tell your story.
