Station: [52] Heating

„Even in the cold winter months, it was easy to live in castle Horst - after all, the owner had had the most modern heating systems of his time installed: stoves made of tiles or iron plates, sometimes combined. These could be fired through wall openings from adjacent rooms or corridors, without there being any dirt or smoke in the good rooms; in addition, iron stove plates ensured better radiation and storage of heat. Of course, Rutger von der Horst also had the fireplaces richly decorated - and so numerous large picture fireplaces made of sandstone were created. Although these did not heat very effectively, they were representative: their impressive representations were without question the highlights of the interior decoration in the castle. They showed well-known and popular biblical or secular motifs; for example, there was the "Cain and Abel fireplace" or the "Troy fireplace", which can be admired today in castle Hugenpoet in Essen. Unfortunately, apart from the "Resurrection Fireplace", hardly anything remains of this old residential splendour in castle Horst itself..."
