Station: [14] The Queen's Bedroom and dressig room

You are in the Queen’s bedroom and dressing room.

At first glance, this isn’t immediately obvious—because there’s no bed. The same is true for the other bedrooms. Although beds were originally planned, they were never actually installed. As a result, these rooms took on a different function; they served more as places of rest and private retreat.

That’s precisely why it’s worth taking a closer look here. An important clue is hidden in the ceiling frieze. To the left and right of the window, you’ll see a rooster and owls. They symbolize morning and evening. This is exactly how they designate the room as a bedroom. It’s a lovely detail. It’s almost like a subtle hint that you only notice upon a second glance.

Something very practical was also hidden behind a door. Behind the mirrored door on the right was a toilet. The room thus combined seclusion, tranquility, and everyday use in a very direct way.

The furniture in this room has been almost entirely preserved to this day. Only a chaise longue is missing. Particularly striking is the large floor-standing mirror. Mirrors of this type and size were very expensive until the mid-19th century—both to manufacture and to purchase. That’s why they were a status symbol for women of high society.

At the same time, such floor-standing mirrors opened up a new possibility. For the first time, ladies could see their entire appearance reflected in them. Named after the Greek goddess of beauty and youth, these mirrors are therefore also called “Psyche.” The name sounds light and elegant. And it suits a piece of furniture that was not only useful but also made a striking impression.

The room you see today has an eventful history. After World War II, all the built-in fixtures were removed. It is precisely these elements that otherwise give a room its solid framework.

Now, this room is being restored to its original condition piece by piece. The Friends of Hohenzollern Castle Association (Freundeskreis der Burg Hohenzollern e.V.) is assisting with financial support. The wall paneling, the wall moldings, and the textile furnishings are being restored. Step by step, the room is regaining its former appearance.

Finally, the corner fireplace will also be reconstructed. It will be built based on the original design. Later, it will be reinstalled in its original location, to the left of the window. In this way, the room is gradually regaining not only its form but also its special atmosphere.
