Station: [29] Introduction to Prehistory

Hello, and welcome to the Natural History Society‘s Department of Prehistory. This is where we head far into the remote past!

The stands to the right of the aisle will take you from the Palaeolithic and the Mesolithic to the Neolithic and on to the Bronze Age....

... while there are Iron Age objects and excavation finds at the rear on the left.

Human evolution began about two and a half million years ago and, based on current knowledge, largely occurred on the African continent. East and South Africa in particular played a role in this development.

But in our exhibition, we focus on the southern part of Middle Franconia, where complex cultures developed from the Palaeolithic onwards, and fascinating treasures were preserved in the soil. During this tour, you’ll pass through a period that starts around 250,000 years ago and lasted until the beginning of the Christian era – in other words, from when the first humans appeared here in Franconia to the Roman military campaigns in around 15 BC.

So let’s begin: Central Franconian prehistory awaits!
