Description
In Leipzig's Seeburgviertel, the Grieg-Begegnungsstätte serves as a biographical museum and meeting place dedicated to the composer Edvard Grieg. The institution was founded in 2005 in commemoration of Grieg; the permanent exhibition opened on 7 November 2005 and is devoted to the life and work of the composer.
The house stands on Talstraße; the Begegnungsstätte occupies the first floor of a building erected in 1874. In earlier decades the building housed Edition Peters, one of the leading music publishers of the early 20th century. Grieg maintained close ties there with Max Abraham, who served as his mentor. In 1858, at the age of 15, Grieg began studies at the Conservatory in Leipzig, which had been founded a few years earlier by Felix Mendelssohn.
The museum's programme focuses on the exhibition and on musical activities in the music hall, which forms the spatial and thematic centre and is regularly used for concerts and events. The listed building bears commemorative plaques for Grieg and Abraham on its exterior; in the garden stands a sculpture of the composer. The Grieg-Begegnungsstätte is also Station 3 of the UNESCO initiative "Leipziger Notenspur".
