Description

The Melanchthon House in Bretten, built between 1897 and 1903 on the site of Philipp Melanchthon’s birthplace, is a museum, library and research center. It has a memorial hall with frescoes and additional chambers containing about 12,000 books, 450 original manuscripts, statues, coats of arms, paintings, commemorative coins and prints.

In the Hall of Cities you can see the wood-carved coats of arms of 121 towns that are known to have had a personal connection with Philipp Melanchthon. In the so-called Hall of Princes there are portraits of princes who introduced the Reformation in their countries.

The museum also displays woodcuts, manuscripts and prints that introduce Melanchthon’s life, his extensive writings and his historical impact.

Guided tours of the museum are available by prior arrangement with the Bretten Tourist Info: Tel. 07252/583710; touristinfo@bretten.de.
