Römermuseum Bedaium

Description

Located in Seebruck on the Chiemsee, the Römermuseum Bedaium presents the archaeological history of the region from prehistory to the Early Middle Ages. The museum is run by the municipality of Seeon-Seebruck; the permanent exhibition comprises about 500 exhibits. In 2023 the museum had 7,200 visitors.

The museum opened on 15 October 1988. Its creation goes back to the initiative of the Heimat- und Geschichtsverein Bedaium, founded in 1979, which brought together local finds and gave the presentation regional significance.

The name Bedaium indicates a settlement at the outflow of the Alz from the Chiemsee since around AD 1. Around AD 300 a fort was added; remains of this late-antique fort were uncovered in 1843 during construction work on the Seebruck church tower. In the surrounding area there is evidence of continuous settlement spanning roughly 4,000 years.

The exhibition was established with the support of the Prähistorischen Staatssammlung in München. On display are, among other things, finds from prehistory, material on the Noric-Celtic village community and the Roman beneficiarii station, as well as objects related to settlement by the Baiuvarii. A section of the fort wall is visible at the museum site. Beginning and ending at the museum is an approximately 27 km archaeological circular trail (opened in 1998) that leads to numerous stations, such as the grave fields of Bedaium, a Celtic homestead in Stöffling, the Celtic earthwork at Truchtlaching, a refuge fort on the Alz, burial mounds and grave fields near Ischl, the hoard from Heimhilgen, the Roman road at Seebruck, and Roman settlement remains and building remnants.
