Description

Experience the town’s history

The local history museum opened in September 2004. The museum’s location is particularly fascinating. It is housed in a listed former vicarage complex, comprising a Baroque vicarage (1753/54), a vicarage barn (1751/52), a third barn (1457/58), a large historic vicarage garden with a washhouse and bakehouse (1811) and an idyllic arbour.

Following extensive renovation work, the first phase of the town history collection has been put on display in the Baroque vicarage. The exhibits trace life since the Middle Ages in three very different districts: the small town of Wendlingen, which became part of Württemberg at an early stage; the Bodelshofen manor; and the small rural community of Unterboihingen. The question of the significance of transport routes runs like a common thread through the exhibition. Whether Roman roads, pilgrimage routes, timber rafting on the Neckar, the railway or the motorway, these factors were closely linked to the town’s social and economic development. In this context, visitors will also find numerous exhibits relating to Wendlingen’s 19th- and 20th-century textile and furniture industries, which had an impact far beyond Württemberg.
