Within Traunstein’s cultural programme, the Städtische Galerie Traunstein plays a significant role; it combines current exhibition projects with the presentation of the municipal art collection.
Since 1980 the gallery has been housed in the historic sections of the Kapuzinerkloster Traunstein. The building complex has been operating since 2020 as the Kulturforum Klosterkirche; the exhibition rooms are located in the former "Portenstock".
The exhibition programme comprises rotating presentations of contemporary art as well as thematically conceived displays in which holdings of the municipal collection are regularly shown. The city’s art collection comprises around 3,000 objects. These include paintings from the 17th century to the present, the estate of the wood engraver Ernst von Dombrowski, and extensive holdings of drawings and sketchbooks, including those of the art educator Georg Huber and the artist Günther Schuhböck. Complementing these are prints and press prints by Wilhelm Neufeld as well as a small group of works on paper by Heinrich Stichter.
The gallery thus positions itself as a place for preserving local artistic heritage and as a platform for contemporary artistic positions.
