[8] Neue Straße 21

Description

The Neue Straße was one of the first streets in Stavenhagen to be renovated in 1992 and 1993. Unfortunately, at that time, the buildings had a high vacancy rate and a substantial need for renovation.

Since then, many heritage-protected buildings and houses of urban character have been renovated. However, some of the buildings were so badly damaged that they had to be demolished. New buildings, with the support of the city, also preserved the historic edges of the space. The renovation of Neue Straße 21 is an excellent example of this.

This house, which is essential to the cityscape, features a charming half-timbered facade that was intended for preservation. The aim of the heritage-based renovation was to stop further decay while preserving as much of the original substance as possible. Old materials such as wood and stone were reused wherever possible. Great care was taken to retain many details, for example, the floorboards. The front door of the house was also refurbished and reinstalled. Where it was impossible to reuse historical building materials, ones that mimicked the originals as closely as possible were employed. To adapt the old building structure to today´s standards, especially with regard to thermal insulation measures, the multi-family residential building was insulated internally with clay bricks. The old dilapidated box windows were replaced by new four-paneled wooden windows. All necessary rebuilding was carried out in close collaboration with the Office for Heritage Protection and the Urban Planning Department. Thus, a building has been created that is efficiently usable and perfectly fits into the Neue Straße.
