[9] Gülzower Damm

Description

Not only in the old town, but also in the western part of the city, a lot has happened over the years. In 2002, an integrated urban development concept was designed as part of a federal competition. Various areas of Stavenhagen were to be beautified, made more usable or otherwise redesigned over a longer period of time.

The development goals for the Weststadt prefab housing estate were clearly defined here: reduction of vacancies, upgrading of the living environment and also the functional and design link between the stone old town and the green Weststadt. To create this gentle transition, the so-called transition zone was created in several construction phases.

The area of the Hopfenhofweg / Gülzow Damm / Malchiner Straße junction forms a special interface. In 2014, a small newly designed urban square with renewed pedestrian paths was created here with the expansion. On the site of the current cycle path, there once ran the small railway embankment. The route of the small railway was indicated in the square design by the relocation of old railway sleepers and planting. It is also reminiscent of an old mining cart, which stands on the remains of the original track.

The "Demminer Kleinbahnen West" was opened to the public on July 1, 1913. They were mainly intended to ensure the transport of sugar beet from the agricultural businesses to the Demmin and Stavenhagen sugar factories. They also transported the daily fresh milk to the dairy, and the passenger carriages were also available to passengers. The main route ran from Demmin via Stavenhagen to Bredenfelde. As part of reparation payments following the Second World War, all rolling and stationary material was dismantled and transported away in the summer of 1945. Only a few metres of tracks remained hidden under old stones and are thus a historical document today.

The former reception building at Malchiner Str. 62 is owned by the federal railway and is used as a residential building.

Following the old railway embankment, you arrive at a historic silo building.

The so-called Egg Store was built in 1880 and is located at Neue Straße 35. It used to serve as a storage for eggs, feed and fertiliser, which explains the nickname of the building that has remained constant to this day. Although there were several changes of ownership until 1949, the purpose of use always remained the same. From 1949, the store was owned by the VEAB Association of Procurement and Purchase Companies and since 1954 the city of Stavenhagen has been the legal successor. Three rooms of the building were used as a venue for vocational instruction at the upper school from 1961. In 1973 it was taken over by the VEB Poultry Industry Neubrandenburg. The Egg Store again lived up to its nickname and was used for the organisation of the purchase of honey, small livestock and eggs. Twenty years later, in 1993, there was a completely new use of the building. After extensive renovation and modernisation measures, the administration of the Stavenhagen Office moved in here. In 2005, the Stavenhagen Office merged with the Reuterstadt, since then the former Egg Store has housed the Building Department and the Public Order Office with registration authority.

Garages were located along the small railway embankment above the silo.

These formed a barrier between the old town and the Weststadt and stood in the way of connecting the two districts. The tear-down was therefore inevitable. In a further step in 2007, the square at the former egg store was developed. There you will now find an informative stele about the egg store itself, the city administration and also the former small railway.

The urban development goal of the last 25 years, to functionally and design-wise link the Weststadt with the city center, has been well achieved through the tear-down of the garages and the creation of new paths. A functional and at the same time architectonically successful new free space has emerged, which not only connects the districts, but with beautiful planting also invites one to linger.
