The Old School Street is one of the most striking streets in the historical old town of the Reuterdorf. It connects the historic city center – church / church square / market square – with the open countryside to the south of the old town via the adjacent Tannenweg. Before renovation, the street was in a state of extreme disrepair. Historic materials were barely present.
The redesign of the Old School Street took place in the years 1997/1998. The design principle of the streets found throughout the old town (sidewalk – curb – roadway – curb – sidewalk) was retained. Parking is possible on the western side of the street.
The fragile track plates of the roadway were replaced by a cobblestone paving. A square gray sidewalk tile was laid diagonally in the sidewalk. The so-called bishop´s hats as an edge finish of the walkway are partially flush with the curb, and sometimes there is small cobblestone paving between curb and sidewalk. For the driveways, small granite paving was used. In this way, the lost historical identity of the street was regained through the use of various noble materials.
However, trees were not typical in the streets of the medieval city. Therefore, the city of Stavenhagen has taken measures for urban greening. For example, the planting campaign "Climbing Roses" from the year 2003 has left its mark on the cityscape. Some specimens of the climbing roses have blossomed beautifully and beautify not only the Old School Street No. 11.
In addition to the actual street renovation, significant urban buildings on the Old School Street have been renovated in recent years. Noteworthy are the facade renovations of houses No. 15 and 17 from the years 2014/2015, as well as those of houses No. 7 and 11 from the years 2016 to 2018.
The residential building Old School Street 17, also an important urban building, is located southwest of the Church. As early as November 2013, the moss-covered roof was re-covered. Leaks were fixed, the gable clad, and a wooden paneling made of larch wood was installed. In a second step, from autumn 2014 to spring 2015 windows, facade and front door were refurbished. It is particularly beautiful that the historical timber framing on the upper floor of the building reappeared. On the upper floor, 4 four-wing windows with mullion and center post, and on the ground floor, 2 four-part windows were installed. The facade was provided with fine plaster, belt cornice, and reveals. Windows and door received a plastic framing. The existing front door was replaced by a new single-leaf entrance door with skylight.
The landmark building Old School Street 15 is a typical building for this street and the entire old town. From August 2014 to January 2015, in consultation with the monument authority, the representative entrance, the roof, and the structured windows were renovated. After the roof was first insulated, it could be covered with small-format, natural red clay tiles and sheeted on the sides. The front door received a skylight and was replaced by a door in nut brown. Corresponding in color, the four-winged wooden windows were also designed in nut brown. As can be seen in the pictures, the entire building has been significantly upgraded through the renovation measure.
The Old School Street No. 11 is a two-story residential building with a five-axis facade structure and was probably built in the founding period. The many original elements of the building were renovated from November 2017 to July 2018. Fortunately, the historic entrance door with its beautiful decorative elements could be preserved. The window renewal took place in November 2017 with four-wing windows with mullion and center post in wood and a real lancet arch. The outside staircase was demolished and rebuilt with granite block steps. The facade was renovated as a smooth plaster facade. The original belt and eaves cornice was preserved and profiled renewed. Bar trims were plastered with a width of 10 cm and a decorative profile was placed below the new granite window sills. The before-and-after photos document the successful craft implementation of the renovation measures, so the proud builder could receive the renovation plaque from the building department on 27.07.2018.
As can be seen in the old photo, Old School Street No. 7 is a building of historical significance. As early as 1884, the then pastor Zander founded the "Herberge zur Heimath" here. After the owners renewed all windows of the street facade at their own expense in June / July 2016, external building renovation was completed in August / September with the plastering of the facade. The facade was newly designed with smooth plaster and structured by eaves cornice and belt cornice. This measure – like the new roof covering in 2011 – was supported by grants. Finally, further ornamental elements were added with attached window and door reveals, as well as profiled window sills.
