Beschreibung

In the early 19th century, our region was a hotspot of turmoil. Repeatedly, there were battles for territories and ranks between the Bavarians and the Austrians. In 1809, it happened not for the first time that the Bavarians allied with Napoleon to corner the Austrians. Even Eggmühl was occupied by the Austrians under Archduke Karl at that time. When Napoleon's troops advanced on April 22, the enemies were clearly outnumbered. It was a relentless battle, ultimately lost by the Austrians. Countless men had fallen. THE MONUMENT In 1909, exactly one hundred years after this battle, the people of Eggmühl erected a monument to honor these fallen men. Since then it has been standing there: "... the Bavarian lion cast in bronze, overlooking the battlefield in mourning for the fallen..." (Monument Association Eggmühl 1909). It perches on a tall pedestal made of shell limestone, proudly and warningly overlooking the surroundings. The "Lion of Eggmühl" guards from a symbolic burial mound the fallen of the "Battle of Eggmühl" of April 22, 1809, who found their final resting place in mass graves. It reminds us of the senseless victims and admonishes us not to settle any dispute by war.
