Beschreibung

The Zeitelmoos is a wooded area and raised bog in the Fichtelgebirge (Upper Franconia). It belongs to the Selb-Wunsiedler Hochfläche natural unit and is located between the towns of Wunsiedel, Hildenbach, Vordorf and Grün in the district of Wunsiedel im Fichtelgebirge. The Zeitelmoos is a designated nature reserve. Large parts of it, around 78 hectares, have been a nature reserve since 1989. The purpose of the protection is to preserve a formerly intact raised bog with its diverse stages of regeneration, including the nutrient-poor, acidic waters, in order to protect the flora and fauna typical or specialized for this habitat and to safeguard the soil composition, water balance and water properties necessary for various biocoenoses. The nature reserve was used for forest beekeeping in the Middle Ages. This is where the name Zeitelmoos comes from. Zeitel comes from the profession of the Zeidler, which was the term for the commercial collection of honey from wild or semi-wild bee colonies. The extraction of peat for domestic fuel, which was practiced by the Hildenbach farmers until 1960, was not insignificant. Today, forestry is carried out by the Bavarian State Forests and the town of Wunsiedel. The municipality of Röslau uses the Zeitelmoos to extract drinking water. There are many legends and stories about fairies, gnomes and all kinds of spooky creatures surrounding the Zeitelmoos.
