When Hesse attended the Real-Lyceum (1886-1890), the building housed the rectorate, now the adult education centre. The upper classes were taught in the classrooms of this rectorate building, but Hesse did not complete them in Calw, but in Maulbronn and Cannstatt. The Latin school plays a role in the stories ‘The Latin School Student’ and ‘Peter Bastian´s Youth’. Hesse´s school experiences in Calw found their way into the novels ‘Unterm Rad’ and ‘Demian’, among others. Before he was born, between June 1871 and July 1872, his mother was the first teacher to teach English in the upper class at a secondary school in Württemberg.
Today, the building houses the VHS (adult education centre)
