The landmark of the town of Calw is the oldest stone bridge over the Nagold with the chapel of St Nicholas on the central pillar; it was built around 1400, renovated in 1863/64 and 1926, when the chapel was given a new turret. For Hesse, the bridge was his "favourite place in the town", even the "cathedral square in Florence" seemed "nothing in comparison". To mark the 125th anniversary of Hermann Hesse´s birth in 2002, a life-size bronze sculpture of Hermann Hesse by the artist Kurt Tassotti was erected on this square. The fountain on the square in front of the bridge became the "Hermann Hesse Fountain" in 1920 by resolution of the local council. On Hesse´s 70th birthday in 1947, the square itself was also named after the 1946 Nobel Prize winner.
