In Hesse´s youth, the Nagold was dammed almost continuously in the town area so that the millers, craftsmen and factories had water power. The tanners, after whom Hesse gave the town the poetic name "Gerbersau", also had their workplaces along the banks. Hermann Hesse liked to fish from the bridge and from the bankside bushes. A hundred metres above the bridge on the right-hand side was the bathing meadow described in "Unterm Rad". Hesse vividly described rafting on the Nagold in the story "Floßfahrt".
