This was the headquarters of the Perrot mechanical workshop and tower clock factory, where Hesse completed a 14-month internship in 1894/95. However, he did not work in this building, but in the Mittlere Mühle (Middle Mill), which stood on the site of today´s Lederstraße parking garage. His teacher, Heinrich Perrot (1864-1949), had rented a workshop there
and become independent from his father´s workshop on Bahnhofstraße. Hermann Hesse incorporated his workshop experiences into “Under the Wheel” and the stories “From the Workshop,” “The Locksmith´s Apprentice,” “Hans Dierlamm´s Apprenticeship,” and “Peter Bastian´s Youth,” among others.
