Description

TSV and women
The Hirsau Gymnastics Club (TSV) used to be based in Württemberg´s oldest gymnasium. Women were always welcome and played an important role in various sports. To this day, the club offers a wide range of sporting activities for young and old alike.

Hirsau Gymnastics and Sports Club (TSV)

In 1879, TSV was founded from the existing civil guard of 1849 and continued the tradition of the gymnastics community, which had been established as early as 1816. Even back then, the former monastery carriage house was used in bad weather, which is why it is considered the oldest gymnasium in Württemberg. However, whenever possible, people exercised outdoors, either on the monastery grounds or in the cattle yard, which later became Aureliusplatz in front of the town hall.

Women´s sports

At the same time as women´s suffrage was introduced, a women´s sports club was formed in 1919. In Ernstmühl, too, there were early swimmers in their own sports club, which merged with TSV in 1920 when the town was incorporated. In 1921, the club was the strongest in the gymnastics district. In 1926, a separate swimming department was founded, with the swimming area located in the Nagold River, above the Bocksteg. When the weather permitted, gymnastics was practiced outdoors. The picture shows the women´s team in the spa gardens in front of the spa house, which was still designed as an open promenade hall. After the Second World War, the club was initially dissolved by the French occupation, but in 1949 women´s gymnastics was revived. Over time, many switched to table tennis or handball. There was also a shift from outdoor to indoor handball. Women increasingly took a liking to tennis as a team sport, so a women´s team was formed. The construction of a tennis clubhouse was pushed forward and completed in 1979. In its anniversary year 2004, the club had 612 members.

Gymnasium in transition

Thanks to the dedication of its members and financial support from the community and a number of sponsors, the club´s long-held dream of owning its own gymnasium finally came true in 1933. The club´s own sports hall, constructed entirely of wood, was inaugurated with a gymnastics display. It was not heated. This did not change until 1951, when sealed windows were installed, a ceiling was added, and wall paneling was installed. For 30 years, it was a training venue for many sports and a playing venue for active table tennis players. In 1979, after the incorporation into the city of Calw, the larger gymnasium built next door was moved into. To this day, the club offers a colorful mix of different sports activities for young and old of both sexes.
