Description
Right next to the Diebsturm is the Gothic building of the Franciscan monastery, also known as the Barfüßerkloster, which was founded in the middle of the 13th century. The first surviving document dates back to 1272. After the monastery was secularized in 1528, the last monks moved to Limburg. Soon the buildings, which were located in the area of today's green spaces, soon fell into disrepair. Apart from the monks' residence, all the buildings were demolished at the end of the 16th century. The outer wall of the residence stands directly on the town wall. The remaining and restored part of the monastery complex is now used for cultural events and civil weddings. The vaulted cellar inside with its well is what makes this building so special. The stair tower in the north is also still preserved.
