[2] Thieves´ Tower

Description

The town´s landmark is the Thieves´ Tower, built around 1300, with its unusual teardrop-shaped floor plan. It was built as part of the town fortifications and later served as a prison for a long time, hence its name. In 1895/96, it was converted into the town´s water tower. During the Second World War, the tower was used as an ammunition depot and partially blown up by the Allied troops. Since its restoration, it has been used as a lookout tower from which you can enjoy a wonderful view over the Taunus and Vogelsberg mountains on a clear day. Inside the tower, a small exhibition explains the history of the town fortifications. The key can be borrowed from the tourist office at Marktplatz 7, the pizzeria "Da Michele", the Venezia ice cream parlor or the Schloss-Café Lukasch.
