Description

The new post office

The newly built Wannweiler post office was opened on 1 September 1950. After Deutsche Bundespost was founded in April 1950, it erected a prestigious new building in Bahnhofstraße. The photo on the right shows the counter room with the post office keeper, Pauline Hipp (1911-1985), who was now employed by the Bundespost. She was the manager of the post office until her retirement. In the course of the conversion from the German Federal Post Office to the private-sector Deutsche Post AG, the building was sold in 1991 and a post office was set up in the former Herrmann laundry factory "Auf der Steinge". This "post office" was also closed a few years later. Now Wannweil, like so many places, only has one post office. The private post office has come full circle. Dr Wolfgang Kaiser set up a GP practice in the building in Bahnhofstrasse. There are currently two doctors´ surgeries in Wannweil.

The postmaster Jakob Hipp

The name "Post-Hipp" is still a household name in Wannweil among the older generation. Wannweil did not have its own post office until 1950. The postmaster Jakob Hipp (1874-1950 see photo) built a post office on his farm at Degerschlachter Straße 5. The brick extension was the Wannweil post office until 1 Sept. 1950. On this day, the prestigious post office building erected by the Bundespost was opened at Bahnhofstraße 6. The postmaster had died a quarter of a year earlier. The new postmistress was his daughter Pauline (1911-1985). From October 1905, "Hippen-Jakob" pulled his post cart to the railway station every morning and collected the letters and parcels. His grandson Walter (1929-2008) played postman as a three-year-old with his grandad´s service cap and post cart. The many letter deliveries to the mothers and wives of soldiers who died in the war were a tough job for Jakob Hipp. From August 1941 to 1945, there were over 80 messages.
