[3] Salzkasten

Description

Built in 1696. In 1722, the house was named after its function: Salzhaus (salt house) (with the name Stadtschrei-berei, as the salt trade was a municipal privilege). During Hesse´s school years, a class from the Latin school was housed in this building. However, Hermann Hesse spent half of his four school years in Calw in a classroom housed in the town hall and the other half in the ‘Spritzenhaus’ attached to the ‘Salzkasten’, the ground floor of which housed the fire brigade. The school building is described, among other things, in the story ‘Unterbrochene Schulstunde’. Salzgasse is mentioned as ‘Hirschengasse’ in the story ‘Die Verlobung’.
