Description

1854-1920 Headquarters of the Calwer Verlagsverein (Calw Publishing Association), founded in 1836, which was run by Hesse´s grandfather Hermann Gundert from 1862 to 1893 and his father from 1893 to 1905. 1862-1893 Official residence of Hermann Gundert and his family. From 1886 to 1889 and 1893 to 1905, the Hesse family also lived in this house with their children, which for Hesse was his actual “father´s house” with his “grandfather´s library.” It was here, during holidays spent at his parents´ house, that he wrote the short stories in the “Calwer Tagebuch” (1901) and parts of the novel “Unterm Rad” (1903/1904). Unfortunately, renovations have completely destroyed the building´s classicist façade. The veranda added to the rear of the house in 1895 at the request of Hesse´s mother was also altered in 2008 and is no longer visible.
