About

Our Landmarks

Lohr am Main is a city steeped in history. This is evidenced not only by the beautiful Franconian half-timbered houses lining the pedestrian zone.

A natural pasture created between the Lohrbach and the Rechtenbach likely provided an incentive for a group of people in ancient times to settle on the intervening hill, outside the floodplain of the Main River. The present-day church hill is believed to have been the nucleus of the city. The current name of the town evolved from "Lare," the term for a natural grazing area, through various modifications. The name Lohr is first mentioned in historical records in 1295. Older archaeological sites have not been discovered to this day, although it is certain that the settlement existed much earlier.

The noble family of Rieneck influenced the history of the area around Lohr am Main for nearly 500 years until the end of the 16th century. Lohr was the capital of the counts. In 1333, Lohr was granted the Gelnhäuser town rights by Emperor Ludwig the Bavarian.

With the extinction of the Rieneck family in 1559, Lohr reverted as a fief to the Archbishopric of Mainz. Following the dissolution of the Electoral Mainz state, Lohr, after a transitional period under the Principality of Aschaffenburg and the Grand Duchy of Frankfurt, became part of the Kingdom of Bavaria in 1814.
