Description

The Grube is one of the oldest urban watercourses in Germany and was artificially created in the mid-13th century, based on a natural stream. Through the Mühlenteich, the Wallenstein trench, and the Wallensteingraben, it connects the Schweriner lake with the Baltic Sea. Constructed in the middle of the 13th century using fieldstones, the Grube served for a long time as a source of drinking and utility water supply for the city's residents. Its water powered mill wheels and served as a fire water reservoir.
