Beschreibung

The mighty sacred building is one of the three main churches in Wismar and an outstanding North German brick Gothic building. It was once the place of worship for craftsmen and traders. The origins of St. George church lie in the first half of the 13th century. Its construction fell into the turbulent times of the late Middle Ages and the Reformation. During centuries of construction, the church was changed several times and was completed in 1594.
The building, which was badly damaged in the Second World War, has been rebuilt since 1990 and reopened in 2010 as a place of worship and cultural church. As a place with a special atmosphere, concerts, exhibitions, readings and church services take place in St. George.  A viewing platform 35 meters high offers an impressive view of Wismar.

The St. George church is one of the largest brick churches in northern and eastern Germany. Destroyed by bombing raids, the ruins fell into further disrepair until 1990. On January 25, 1990, a hurricane caused the gable of the north transept to collapse. This event gave the impetus for the reconstruction of the church. In May 2010, “20 years of reconstruction of St. George was celebrated.
With the viewing platform on St. George, Wismar offers its holidaymakers and day visitors a new and impressive view of the old town, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the harbor. The elevator to the viewing platform can be used every day during opening hours.
