The Wassertor is the last remaining of the original five city gates as part of the city's fortifications. Built in the brick Gothic style around 1450, the Water Gate was the only gate through which one could enter the town directly from the harbour. On the town side, the gate has a typical late Gothic stepped gable, while the north gable, which was remodelled around 1600, is triangular in shape. Both gable facades are decorated with blinds and two coats of arms each. In the course of industrial development in 1869/70, the town walls, towers and the other four town gates were demolished.
