[2] Schlosspark mit Schlossmauer und Schlossbergstraße

Description

The entire castle complex on the Schlossberg with the Baroque castle from 1740, the castle courtyard, the park, and the castle wall shape the cityscape of the Reuterstadt. The foundation of the city originated from this location in the 13th century. After the castle was renovated for 3 million Euros from 1997 to 1999, the Schlossbergstraße with a parking lot, the castle park, and the park walls were renewed for an additional 1.74 million Euros from 2001 to 2007. This was based on historical accounts of the old complex. The castle park of Stavenhagen also plays a significant role in Reuter´s novel "Ut de Franzosenlid".

With great effort, it was possible to recreate the historically significant ensemble of the castle, castle park, and walls as a harmonious whole. Since then, the beauty of the park has invited locals and tourists alike to linger extensively. While the little ones can romp around on the large playground, the adults are sure to find a beautiful seat to enjoy the splendid nature. From afar it is possible to catch a glimpse of the Schlossberg and the castle. Additionally, the city of Stavenhagen regularly attracts visitors and citizens to cultural events in the park, which is now also used as a festival grounds.

In addition to redesigning the castle park, a special focus was placed on the renovation of the park wall. This was funded with a total height of 365,000 Euros from urban development funds and the city´s own funds.
In April 2017, construction work began again in the area next to the northeastern park entrance. First, the existing planting was removed. The 35m leaning wall was demolished and rebuilt after renewing the foundation. Unfortunately, many of the stones were destroyed due to the too hard cement grout, so that only about 30% of the old bricks could be reused. Therefore, – in consultation with the monument conservation – new bricks had to be used for the remaining 70% masonry, but these correspond in shape and color to the old ones. After the wall stood upright again, the jointing with shell limestone and the painting work could be carried out in July and August 2017. The final work was then implemented until the end of November 2017. On the side facing the Ernst-Lübbert-Weg, climbing roses, clematis, perennials, and bulb flowers were reintroduced in front of the old wall in its new steadfastness. The planted area was mulched and in May 2018 the first roses, sage, and lilies sprouted. The side facing the Franzosenweg, on the other hand, was and was not planted. Instead, new wooden bollards were set up there to keep the traffic loads away from the wall and to prevent another sinking.

In addition to renewing the castle park and the park wall, the Schlossbergstraße was also renovated for a total of 325,000 Euros. The Schlossbergstraße leads from the most important square of the Reuterstadt – the market place – to the now most important building – the castle as a citizens´ and administrative center. This part of the town is the origin of the city. During the renovation, care was taken to maintain the historical structures of the street space. Small cobblestones were laid along the castle park wall, which were joined by granite slabs as sidewalks. Then granite cobblestones were laid on the roadway, as well as in the expanded entrance area to the castle park. For visitors arriving by car, a parking lot with 47 parking spaces was created on the south side of the street.
