The palace served as a residence for the field marshal during the times of Augustus the Strong, who served the king in military matters. The god of war Mars, made of Cotta sandstone in the roof zone to the left of the main entrance, seems to expect his commands from here.
Later, this building held the two perhaps most prominent prisoners - August Bebel and Wilhelm Liebknecht. Both had to serve a two-year fortress sentence in Hubertusburg from 1872 - 1874, after being found "guilty" on March 26, 1872 by the Leipzig jury court for preparing high treason (Leipzig High Treason Trial).
