The city-shaping parish church on Sperlingsberg was founded in the mid-13th century and completely burned down in 1499.
The reconstruction began in 1513 by the Bishop of Salhausen in the late Gothic style. In 1637, the church completely burned down. The rebuilding as a three-aisle hall church with a wooden ceiling began in 1673 and was completed in 1689. With the separation of the nave from the altar room, a new Eule- organ was inaugurated in 1999.
The 52-meter-high tower with its baroque dome from 1689 housed the watchman´s apartment until 1911. It was both the workplace and residence of the city´s watchman, who was responsible for the hour strike and the fire alarm. It has been open to the public again since 1997.
