The market was established before the 13th century between the cathedral precinct and the old town. Its overall appearance is still today characterized by houses built at the end of the 19th century. However, comprehensive renovations have also preserved buildings from the 17th and 18th centuries. On the north side of the market is a residential and commercial building restored in 1998 with a stone eagle. This reminds us that the present stationery business was once a much-visited inn. Almost all the houses on the east side of the market have been extensively renovated. The former "Pippig" hotel on the west side of the market, adorned with a beautiful bay window, used to be one of the first addresses of Wurzen´s gastronomy. The historically styled lanterns lend a special flair to the downtown area. The candelabras manufactured in Wurzen are a special adornment to the otherwise simply beautiful market square.
