Description

The St. Nikolai Church, a monumental brick building, was built from 1381 to 1487 as a church for sailors and fishermen. The construction of today's church began in the 14th century. The tower originally had a slim roof turret. During a hurricane in 1703, the 60 meter high spire collapsed and destroyed the roof and vault of the nave as well as the interior. The pulpit and altar were renewed by the end of the 18th century. This is how the late Gothic church came to have a baroque interior.
The impressive three-aisled sacred building with its 37 meter high nave is the fourth highest nave in Germany.
