The Wasserkunst, a pavilion-like, free-standing building directly on the market square in Wismar, is considered a landmark of the Hanseatic city. The elaborate structure was built from 1579 to 1602 according to plans by the Utrecht master builder Philipp Brandin in the Dutch Renaissance style. The Wasserkunst was used to supply the city with drinking water until 1897. The banners in Latin and German report on the drinking water supply in earlier times.
